Toni maticevski's secret to chic
Toni Maticevski has become the darling of Australian fashion, creating beautiful silhouettes for the modern woman. But the designer hasn’t kept to Australia, oh no, he’s out to conquer the world… including Bollywood!
I sat down for an exclusive interview with the fashion guru. I asked him about Bollywood, his style tips and fashion no-nos.
Hoture: Bollywood’s hottest women have been spotted in your designs. The gorgeous Priyanka Chopra wore a black and white body hugging dress from your 2014 collection to the GQ Awards, while Soman Kapoor showed she’s a huge Maticevski fan, dazzling in two full-skirt designs. How does it feel watching Maticevski become a truly international brand?
Toni: I am always blown away when I see these international and key figures in fashion wear and support my brand.
Hoture: Important Question! Name the item every woman should have in her wardrobe?
Toni: Hmmmm… If I were to pick one thing it would be a super sleek black pencil skirt…. with a Maticevski twist.
Hoture: You’re renowned for luxe fabrics and immaculate tailoring, reminiscent of a by-gone era. Where do you draw your inspiration?
Toni: I never look in one direction when it comes to inspiration. I am always inspired by the beautiful and unique fabrics which I am constantly sourcing and as I also work with many different clients I am constantly inspired by all the diverse ways my brand is worn and styled.
Hoture: Hollywood A-listers are usually perfectly styled, but even they get it wrong sometimes... What’s your biggest fashion faux-pas?
Toni: I would say that a women should always pay attention to the shoe she styles with her look, Also keep the hair pulled back and natural - there's no need to overly style the hair. Biggest faux-pas; I guess is in the eyes of the individual. What’s bad to one person is brilliant to another.
Hoture: Your pieces are not just made for real-life and runway, they’re also art. You've designed pieces for ballet productions and art exhibitions. Has that changed your attitude to fashion?
Toni: It has, it’s something which is has always been important to me and is a creative outlet to expose techniques. In saying that - I will always feed these ideas into my RTW collections as I feel it’s always important to have a little bit of art everyday.
