Selena Gomez shocks fans with kidney transplant news
Selena Gomez shocked the world when she revealed on Thursday that her best friend Francia Raisa, donated one of her kidneys to her after her Lupus condition required the operation earlier this summer. She shared the information with her fans on her Instagram account which has more than 127 Million followers, the most on the social media platform.
“I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of,” said the ‘Hands To Myself’ singer in the post. “So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health,” she said.
Gomez, whose hits include ‘Good for You’, ‘Same Old Love’ and ‘Come & Get It’, has been in the spotlight since she was a child. She appeared on ‘Barney and Friends’ before breaking through as a teen star on the Disney Channel’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’. It’s been almost two years that she revealed about her lupus. In the post, she thanked her family and team of doctors too. “I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery."
Gomez posted a photo holding hands with actress Raisa across hospital beds. She thanked Raisa saying, "And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made." She also posted a photo showing her surgical scar.
Raisa, a 29-year-old model and actress from Los Angeles, is the daughter of radio personality Renan Coello. She played Adrian Lee in the ABC Family hit series ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ and played Leti in the 2006 film ‘Bring It On: All or Nothing’. Raisa has also starred in a few episodes of ‘Dear White People’ and one episode of ‘The Mindy Project’. She's also won a 2011 Gracie award and a La Femme Film Festival Rising Star award in 2012, both for her role in ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’.
In response to Gomez’s post, Raisa said she was 'grateful' at having the chance to help her friend. She wrote: I am beyond grateful that God would trust me with something that not only saved a life, but changed mine in the process. This was part of our story, and we will share it soon, but what is important now is that this is not the only story.
Interestingly, Gomez’s former boyfriend singer Justin Bieber found out about the transplant just like the rest of her fans via her Instagram post because they just don’t talk anymore. This dashes the hope of all the fans who wished their two stars to get back together.
Meanwhile, the beautiful actress who has been dating the singer 'The Weeknd' for several months now is working in untitled Woody Allen film alongside Timothee Chalamet. It will be out next year.
What is Lupus
Lupus is an autoimmune disease, where the body mistakenly attacks its own tissues, sometimes including the kidneys. One healthy kidney is all the body needs, so a single kidney transplant can resolve the problem. The causes of lupus are unknown. Symptoms can include bloody or foamy urine, unexplained weight gain, high blood pressure or swelling in the legs, ankles or around the eyes.
